The SIUE Institutional Biosafety Committee (IBC) has recently issued an update to the biosafety level classification of all human cell lines and tissue. Citing the recommendation of the 6th Edition of the Biosafety in Microbiological and Biomedical Laboratories (BMBL) published by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, all human cell lines and human tissue (unfixed) will be handled using biosafety level 2 practices regardless of pathogen screening or ATCC rating. For more information on this update and the SIUE Policy on Biohazardous Material Use please visit The Graduate School’s Compliance Biohazardous Material website. For questions on how to submit an application to the IBC to work with human cell lines, please visit the protocol submission guidelines website or email us at researchcompliance@siue.edu.
