As spring turns to summer, so do our thoughts turn to flying drones. With that in mind, this is a reminder for those of us who use Unmanned Aerial/Aircraft Systems (UAS)/drones for SIUE activities.
If you plan to purchase, build and/or fly a drone or other UAS on property owned by SIUE or off-campus for University business, you must first obtain permission before any flights occur by doing the following:
- Have the Graduate School register your drone with the FAA. (Registration must be done by SIUE and not yourself.)
- Obtain University approval submitting the Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV) Registration form AND the Unmanned Aircraft Systems (UAS) Application
Approval process
Complete and submit the required UAV application via Kuali Build by clicking here.
The application includes:
- SIUE Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV) Registration Form
- SIUE Unmanned Aircraft Systems (UAS) Use Application Form
- UAS Pilot/Operator Qualifications Form
If you wish to become a certified Drone pilot visit: https://www.faa.gov/uas/commercial_operators/become_a_drone_pilot/
The nearest testing center to SIUE is:
Southwestern Illinois College
4950 Maryville Rd.
Granite City, IL
(618)931-0600
If you are already a licensed part 107 pilot and want to update your license, you can take the recertification online. Check out the FAA courses webpage and look for the ALC-677: Part 107 Small UAS Recurrent Non-Part 61 Pilots course.
To fly a drone or other UAS for recreational activities not associated with SIUE business, see section III B of University Policy 6F4: www.siue.edu/policies/6f4.shtml. To fill out the required Facility Use License Agreement, please click here and choose that this application is for “Recreational Use.”
