Disciplines: All
On December 28th , 2020, the FAA published the Final Rules on Remote ID and Operation of Small Aircraft Systems Over People and At Night. These rules are the next step to clear the way for organizations to use drones for commercial purposes but will affect some SIUE UA operators.
These rules take effect on March 16th, 2021 with compliance required for Remote ID in September 2023. UA manufacturers and producers must start meeting the Remote ID requirements in September of 2022.
The rules might require some SIUE UA operators to purchase upgrades to existing unmanned aircraft, such as protective devices for exposed rotating parts or a Remote ID broadcast module -depending on UA operations. The Graduate School has an internal funding program to provide funds to assist with updating and furnishing research equipment and research tools. Applications must be submitted via the online application by the Fourth Monday in February. Any funds awarded must be expended or encumbered by June 30, annually. For more information on how to apply, who can apply, and more, check out the Research Equipment and Tools Funding webpage.
Remote ID will be required for any UA weighing .55lbs or more operated under rules that require registration (such as part 107). Operations over people will apply to part 107 flyers and will not change the regulations on operations that flyers conduct for recreation. For more detailed information on the final rules, including when the rules apply, dates of compliance, and how to comply, check out the FAA’s published “Executive Summary” on Remote ID and Operations Over People. These links will also be posted on our website along with the application to fly a drone on SIUE’s campus. Our application will be updated as applicable compliance dates near.
For any questions on whether the changes apply to your flight or how to fill out the application to fly a drone, you can email us at researchcompliance@siue.edu.
