In addition to meeting the Graduate School requirements for admission, applicants must have an undergraduate grade-point average of at least 2.75 (A = 4.0) in engineering, mathematics and physical science courses. Applicants should have a baccalaureate degree in mechanical engineering from an ABET-accredited program. Applicants who completed a non-ABET accredited program must have a baccalaureate degree in mechanical engineering which is comparable to an ABET-accredited program, and are encouraged to take the Graduate Record Examination to support their application. Applicants whose undergraduate degrees are in other engineering or selected areas of mathematics or physical science will be considered for admission on an individual basis, and may be required to take additional undergraduate courses to remove the deficiencies prior to initiating or concurrently with their graduate studies.
Exceptions may be made by the graduate admission committee for applicants who meet all the Graduate School admission standards but not all the admission standards for Mechanical Engineering provided additional evidence is provided that indicates high promise of success in the program. Such supportive evidence may include high scores on the Graduate Record Examination, professional registration, extensive professional experience, professional publications, or satisfactory graduate level work.

In addition to the graduate school requirements, a new student will meet with the graduate program director who will, in consultation with the student and the advisor, appoint an academic advisor according to the students interest and background, as well as the availability of the advisor. The advisor will work out a program of study and select an advisory committee with the student.
For thesis option, the student thesis work will be guided by the academic advisor with the assistance and concurrence of the advisory committee. The thesis topic will be selected from an area in mechanical engineering and approved by the advisor.
For non-thesis option, the student prepares a research paper, the topic of which is mutually agreed upon by the student and the advisory committee. No credit is awarded for the completion of this research paper.
