Construction Students Visit Multiple Job Sites this Semester
Posted December 3, 2021
This semester Construction Management students have been taking breaks from the classroom to visit active construction job sites to
learn firsthand what a career in Construction Management looks like.
Senior students took their first trip to the Katherine Dunham house in East St. Louis on September 2. In preparation for the senior capstone project, students learned about the legacy of Katherine Dunham and the importance of the project to the East St. Louis Community. Architect, Lorenzo Savage, provided the scope for the project that students used throughout the semester to prepare hypothetical bids they will present to the client. Several return trips were made to assist with the clean up of the properties prior to the start of the restoration.
On October 26, members of the Senior Assignment CNST 452 class attended a field trip to the condos that Pfund Construction is building on the corner of Esic Road and Highway 157 in Edwardsville, Illinois. During the trip Corey Pfund described the operational and logistics challenges that normally occurred in his day-to-day construction operations. Corey provided insightful perspective as a superintendent for the company. The students looked at onsite logistics, flatwork, masonry work, rough-in MEP, HVAC, fire protection systems, and carpentry.
On November 3, students from the Construction Club and the Plans and Specifications class CNST 341 traveled to two different
Contegra tilt-up construction sites. The first site Contegra was pouring and finishing the floor slab for a 500,000 square-foot distribution center. The students were able to view the concrete finishing operations. Additionally, the students were able to view formwork for the pouring of tilt-up wall panels for the warehouse. Following this site, the students went to another location where they were able to see where the wall panels were standing, and the roof structural steel was being placed. Tie-in slabs between the wall and flooring sections were observed.
