Biographical Information

Nader Panahshahi, Ph.D.

Dr. Nader Panahshahi is Professor of Structural Engineering in the Civil Engineering Department at SIUE who enjoys teaching a number of undergraduate and graduate courses and conducting research in area of earthquake resistant design. Dr. Panahshahi received his B.S. and M.S. degrees in Civil Engineering from Oklahoma State University, Stillwater, Oklahoma, and his Ph.D. degree in Structural Engineering from Cornell University, Ithaca, New York. Prior to Joining SIUE in 1990, Dr. Panahshahi was Research Associate at Multidisciplinary Center for Earthquake Engineering Research (MCEER), State University of New York (SUNY) at Buffalo. His past research accomplishment includes successful completion of analytical and experimental research projects of building and bridges sponsored by NSF, MCEER and Illinois Transportation Research Center (ITRC). Dr. Panahshahi received the ACI Structural Research Award in 1994 as lead author of the paper entitled "Reinforced Concrete Compression Lap Splices under Inelastic Cyclic Loading" in the ACI Structural Journal.

Dr. Panahshahi is currently faculty advisor of Chi Epsilon Chapter at SIUE and has served as the past Chairperson (2012-2014) and Graduate Program Director (1993-1998) of the Civil Engineering Department. Since joining SIUE, Dr. Panahshahi has also served on numerous University committees, and he was a member of the Graduate Council and Faculty Senate.

Dr. Panahshahi’s industry experience includes working as structural engineering team member at Horner and Schifrin, Inc., St. Louis, Missouri, for the 2003 NCSEA Excellence in Structural Engineering Award winning “Stacy Park Reservoir Seismic Retrofit Project”. Dr. Panahshahi is a member of several professional organizations including ACI, ASCE, EERI, PCI and SEI, and an associate member ACI Committee 444, Structural Health Monitoring and Instrumentation. He also has served as one of the founding directors of Earthquake Engineering Research Institute (EERI) New Madrid Chapter in St. Louis (1995-2002).
