Civil Engineering Graduate Student Team Takes 2nd Place in the 2022 Intelligent Water Systems Student Research Competition

SIUE Civil Engineering (environmental engineering) graduate student Shaker Nairat and two graduate students (Yanran Xu and Zixuan Wang) from Washington University in St. Louis (environmental engineering) won a 2nd place award at the 2022 Intelligent Water Systems Student Research Competition, held on April 25 at the Illinois Wastewater Professionals Conference. The research project was titled, “Machine Learning and Deep Learning Assisted Phosphorus Concentration Prediction and Anomaly Alarm in a Wastewater Treatment Plant” (WWTP), which used the data from the SIUE WWTP for modeling and analysis. The team advisors were Dr. Jianpeng (Jim) Zhou of SIUE Civil Engineering Department and Dr. Zhen (Jason) He of Washington University in St. Louis Energy, Environmental & Chemical Engineering Department. The data collection of the work received support from the SIUE Environmental Resource Training Center’s Matthew Maas, Ricky Lallish, and SIUE WWTP Operation John Harper.
