About Dr. Breck
Susan E. Breck, Ph.D. is a Professor in the Department of Teaching & Learning in the School of Education, Health and Human Behavior at Southern Illinois University. She obtained her doctorate in Curriculum and Instruction at the University of Kansas in 1994 and joined the SIUE faculty in fall 2001. Dr. Breck currently is serving as Chair of the Department and Director of Assessment for SEHHB. Prior to her administrative duties, Dr. Breck taught graduate courses including Analysis of Instruction, Adolescent Development, and Middle Level Philosophy, Curriculum, and Organization. At the undergraduate level, Dr. Breck has taught Social Studies methods for elementary and secondary, as well as Planning for Diverse Learners. Dr. Breck is leading the Teacher Education programs accreditation process and serves as a CAEP accreditation reviewer.
Research Profile
Dr. Breck has written and presented in the areas of Teacher Preparation and Middle Level Education. Much of her research is focused on the study of her own practice as a teacher educator. Typically housed within middle level education, her research examines teacher education program development, topics addressed in middle level teacher education or, more recently, of her own teaching itself. She has come to believe that teacher education and the act of teaching itself is her discipline, and is committed to the ongoing study of her practice as part of her research agenda.
