CSPA Distinctive Curriculum


First-Year: Foundations Year

EPFR 504: Foundations of Higher Education-Key developments in the role and function of higher education in the U. S., with emphasis on student affairs practice.

EPFR 514: College Student Learning and Development- Overview of college student development theories, processes and problems, with a focus on application.

EDAD 574: Introduction to Student Affairs Administration-Major theories and their application to higher education, with emphasis on student affairs programs.

EPFR 522: Diversity in Higher Education-History of addressing equity and inclusion in higher education; exploration of theories and practices.

EDAD 554: Practicum I & II-Field assignment in student affairs offices in higher education settings.  Seminar discussions of work experience as well as facilitated special topics.

Second-Year: Research Year

EDAD 524: Legal & Ethical Issues in Student Affairs-Legal status of students; legal and ethical issues surrounding admissions, financial aid, student records, discipline, and support services.

EPFR 516: Leadership Theory & Practice in Higher Education-Advisement of college students; the design, implementation, and evaluation of developmentally appropriate strategies for individuals and groups.

EPFR 503: Research Methods in Higher Education-Introduction to research methods in higher education, with a focus on conceptual, methodological, and practical issues in quantitative and qualitative research. Research Proposal Assignment.

EPFR 506: Assessment and Evaluation in Student Affairs-Introduction to assessment and program evaluation in higher education.

EDAD 594 I & II: Final Research Project-Research culminating in final project on student affairs topic. Written report and oral defense.

Elective Options

IT 490: Advising & Student Success-Comprehensive overall of student retention, academic advising, and other approaches that facilitate persistence towards graduation.

EPFR 563: Gender & Higher Education-Topics include the gender stratification of the higher education system, a critical review of research, campus gender relations, and controversies in the policies and discourse regarding gender diversity.

EPFR 563: Helping Skills for Higher Education Professionals-  Provides an overview of collegiate mental health history and trends, helping skills, best practices in referring students, and perspective on differentiating the role of advising, supervising, coordinating, and mentoring from the professional delivery of clinical mental health services.

EDAD 564: The Community College-Overview of 2-year postsecondary institutions, with emphasis on the evolution and functions of comprehensive community college.

EDAD 583: Organization & Administration of Higher Education-Community college and four-year public university and college systems; governance and programs.

Exit Requirement

SAGE Portfolio-Occurs after all required courses except for practicum and Final Research Project course have been successfully completed
