"The ABCs of CBCT: Academic Answers, Best Practices and Compelling Cases"
Presented in person or via Zoom by Dr. John Khademi, DDS, MS
In Hoag Hall (Building 283) on the Alton Campus or via Zoom
Schedule of Events:
7:30 a.m. - Registration8 a.m. to Noon - Lecture
Overview:
The logistics for reviewing CBCT studies is radically different from that of projection radiography, along with being counter-intuitive, and not widely appreciated in dentistry. The sheer number of possible views with CBCT coupled with the interpretive issues confound both CBCT and projection radiography, which has led to guidelines position papers for prescribing and interpreting imaging studies. These guidelines claim to be scientifically-based, but are not based on what has been learned about the interpretive process in medical radiology. Medical radiology has a long and deep history of academic inquiry into perception metrology and the radiographic interpretive process. This presentation will review key research findings, introduce guidelines and best practices for interpreting CBCT based on what has been learned about the perceptual and cognitive processes from medical radiology. We will develop these protocols using real clinical cases from the presenter’s practice.
Objectives:
- Have an explicit strategy for efficiently reviewing focused-field, single-arch, ½ arch and dual-arch studies
- Gain a window into the subtle perceptual and cognitive issues with image interpretation
- Understand the role of explicit, tacit and embedded history in the interpretive process
- Understand the critical distinction between diagnostic imaging and screening imaging
- Understand the role of language in driving decision-making
Presenter:
Dr. Khademi received his DDS from the University of California - San Francisco and his certificate in endodontics and his MS on digital imaging from the University of Iowa. He is in full time private practice in Durango, Colorado. He was an Associate Clinical Professor in the Dept. of Maxillofacial Imaging at USC and is an Adjunct Assistant Professor at SLU. In his “prior life”, he wrote software for laboratory automation, instrument control and digital imaging. He lectures internationally about CBCT, clinical trial design, outcomes, and conventional endodontic technique. As a Radiological Society of North America (RSNA) member for over 25 years, his background in medical radiology allows him a perspective shared by very few dental professionals. He has contributed to many sections and chapters in textbooks and is the lead author for Quintessence’s: Advanced CBCT for Endodontics: Technical Considerations, Perception, and Decision-Making.
