In-Person Crisis Appointments at SIUE Counseling Services
What is the definition of a psychological crisis?
Under most circumstances, one is able to attune to the demands of one’s life and adjust one’s ability to cope accordingly. Coping is the investment of one's own conscious effort, to solve personal and interpersonal problems, in order to try to master, minimize or tolerate stress and conflict. A crisis occurs when existing coping strategies have been exhausted in an attempt to self-regulate. Crises escalate to behavioral emergencies when immediate intervention is warranted to avoid injury or death. Crisis appointments at SIUE Counseling Services respond both to crises and behavioral emergencies.
- Pre-screening: All students visiting Counseling and Health Services will be expected to engage in medical clearance regarding COVID-19 symptoms. Call (618) 650-2842 to alert us of your interest in a crisis visit. When you arrive to the clinic, you will need to bring a mask. If you don’t have one, we will make one available for you for $1 cash. If there are concerns about wearing a mask, you may purchase a face shield for $3 cash. Both are available in our pharmacy. When you arrive to the suite, since you pre-called, a nurse will meet you at the front door, which will remain closed until COVID-19 is managed. Upon medical clearance, you will be led into the suite and will fill out a crisis form. This form will alert our staff to the nature of your concerns. Your counseling provider will then escort you to the conference room, where you and your provider will be able to maintain 6 feet apart.
- During the visit: As described above, the purpose of a crisis visit is to offer psychological stabilization in circumstances where students can’t cope with their current stressors. Your counseling provider will focus on helping you to de-escalate and manage the current stressors.
- The goals of crisis appointments are to (1) assess for signs of decompensation (e., deteriorated coping and resultant reduced functioning) and to (2) enhance coping and restore functioning. This will include assessment of the following:
- Current distress-inducing factors
- Coping strategies
- Risk and protective factors
- Mental status exam
- If it is determined that safety cannot be achieved independently, the counseling provider will explore safety planning, including the possible role of hospitalization in the restoration of functioning, in the event your safety seems is in a perilous predicament.
