As the Associate Director, Lisa assists with administrative and supervisory needs of Counseling Services. She also sees students for individual and group therapy. She provides support using conventional “talk therapy” approaches, along with the use of art materials as a means for nonverbal communication. Lisa serves as the Project Coordinator for iCare, the campus initiative intended to improve on awareness and prevention of suicide. In that capacity, Lisa provides outreach support, trainings, and ongoing programming relevant to suicide prevention.
She has previous experience as a Student Affairs professional working in Residence Life, Judicial Affairs, Study Abroad, Law School Administration, and with the Dean of Students. Her work as a Student Affairs professional informs her clinical approach in working with college students and supporting their academic and out-of-classroom success. She is skilled in working collaboratively with campus partners to advance the mission and goals of Counseling Services.
In my role as Associate Director:
“My goal is to connect with students and support them in achieving their goals for counseling. I use strategies to individualize my approach to the student’s unique needs and expectations for improvement and growth. I enjoy working with diverse students and have a special affinity for first generation college students. As an art therapist, I love offering students a variety of ways to express their experiences, especially using art materials. Art therapy provides a vehicle to express feelings and ideas that are difficult to capture in words alone. It’s not like being in an art class, though! Anyone can benefit from using art materials in therapy for a variety of concerns. My approach is also influenced by making connections between the body and mind, feminist and multicultural theories, and attachment theory. My intention is to support students in leading their best life and reaching their personal and professional potential.”
Lisa returned to the SIUE Counseling Services team in summer, 2016. She was a practicum student in Counseling Services as a graduate student before moving to South Carolina and working in an elementary school and in a private practice. Lisa has earned two master’s degrees. Her first is from Michigan State University in College and University Administration. Her second is in Art Therapy Counseling from SIUE. Lisa became a Licensed Professional Counselor in Illinois in 2016. She is working toward being a Licensed Clinical Professional Counselor and having ATR (Art Therapist Registered) status.
