Enhancing Therapy with Psychotropic Medication

When used together, psychotropic medication and therapy are the most effective treatment for depression, anxiety, and other mental health concerns. Medications are prescribed when symptoms of mental or emotional illness are severe, persistent, and interfere with normal functioning. On occasion, two or more medications maybe prescribed to relieve multiple symptoms. All drugs require careful monitoring.

Why Use Medication for Mental Health?

  • Medication can be useful

    • Medication can help treat the symptoms of mental health concerns.
    • These medications can be very effective, but they shouldn't be thought of as a cure. Medication can provide temporary relief, but it doesn't treat the underlying cause. Once you stop taking the drug, the symptoms often return in full force
  • Medication can support the psychotherapy process

    • It can help to stabilize mood, decrease anxiety, improve focus, improve daily functioning, etc. Allowing further progress in therapy.
    • Therapy and self-help strategies can help you get to the bottom of your underlying issues and develop the tools to improve overall functioning. So while drug treatment can be beneficial, it's by no means the only answer.
  • Psychotherapy and Medication

    • Many psychological concerns originate and are influenced by what happens to us and around us. Medications don't change how you relate psychologically to experiences, and alone cannot "fix" all psychological issues.
    • Studies have found that treatment with psychotherapy and medication together is more effective and longer lasting than treatment alone!!!

What should I ask my Physician/Therapist?

  • What symptom relief can I expect? And when?
  • I know I am suppose to take it as it's prescribed, but what will happen if I miss a dose?
  • What are possible side effects and how long might they last?
  • What initial and ongoing tests/lab work is required?
  • How long might I be on the medicine, and how do I discontinue?
  • Will my routine activities or diet be restricted?
  • What follow-up medication appointments and treatment sessions are required?
  • What do I do if I want to stop taking my medication?
