Graduating with Honors

Honors at commencement are based on the prior-term cumulative grade point average. Honors status is not calculated for graduate students.

Students graduating with honors will be noted in the commencement program and will be given academic cords to wear with their cap and gown. Because final grades are not available at the time of commencement, honors status at commencement will reflect the cumulative GPA at the completion of the term prior to graduation.

Honor cords will be distributed with the cap and gown. There is no additional charge for the academic cord, and no additional paperwork is required for the student. Cords will be ordered automatically for students based on honors status information provided by the Office of the Registrar.

  • Red Cord = Cum laude (with honors - 3.50 to 3.74)
  • Gold Cord = Magna Cum Laude (with high honors - 3.75 to 3.89)
  • White Cord = Summa Cum Laude (with highest honors - 3.90 or higher)

Actual degree honors will be calculated following final term grades. The notation of honors recorded on your diploma and transcript will reflect final honors calculation rather than commencement honors.

If you have questions about your honors status, please contact the Registrar's office at (618) 650‑3770.
