Timothy E. Lewis

Dr. Timothy E. Lewis is an identity politics researcher, social justice activist, and Assistant Professor of Political Science at Southern Illinois University Edwardsville. He holds a Bachelor of Arts in Political Science and a Bachelor of Arts in History from the historic Tuskegee University. He received a M.S. in International Relations from Troy University and Ph.D. in Political Science from the University of Missouri-St. Louis.
Dr. Lewis specializes in the politics of marginalized and disadvantaged identities. This has led to original research of racial minorities (specifically African Americans), non-heteronormative identities, and women and gender minorities. This study of marginalized identities also is important in critically assessing equity, or the absence thereof, in state policy globally, specifically HIV/AIDS policy in southern Africa.
Dr. Lewis is also a diversity, inclusion, equity, and social justice (DIESJ) trainer and coordinator. He holds the philosophy that DIESJ are not areas of work; rather they should be value-based approaches to all work. With an inductive approach, he instructs that DIESJ are principled approaches and remedial values in addressing structural inequity across all societal institutions.
Dr. Lewis is a member the Northeastern Political Science Association (NPSA) and the National Conference of Black Political Scientists (NCOBPS).
