Overview – Music – Jazz Performance

Jazz Performance at SIUE

At SIUE, our mission is to graduate versatile, well-rounded musicians who can be successful in a variety of music endeavors and who can adapt to a constantly changing music environment. The program’s jazz curriculum encompasses courses on improvisation, theory, history, arranging-composition, education, recording techniques and ensemble performance (combo, big band, vocal jazz and guitar). Jazz Combo is the required ensemble for all jazz performance majors. The program is led by jazz musicians who hold advanced degrees in jazz studies and specialize in jazz applied instruction. Because class sizes are kept small, faculty can offer the benefit of their practical experiences and ample personalized attention. SIUE also has an outstanding rehearsal facility which includes two jazz exclusive rehearsal rooms — complete with drum set, piano and amplifiers — and 24-channel digital recording capability from each of five rehearsals rooms into a centralized recording studio.

Career Opportunities

A degree in jazz performance from SIUE prepares students for careers as successful performers, composers, educators and cultural leaders. Some students continue their studies in graduate schools while others have gone on to successful careers in music composition, tour management, administration, performance and teaching. Competition in the music business is keen and the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics predicts employment of musicians and related workers to grow approximately eight percent over the next eight years.
