Social Science Teacher Certification

SIUE offers a variety of programs that lead to a teaching certificate.  Within the Social Sciences a student can major in Geography, History, or Political Science to pursue a teaching certificate.  

A Secondary Education certificate in Social Studies through Geography requires a major in Geography, a Social Sciences Minor (see below) , and professional education courses through the School of Education, Health, and Human Behavior.

Requirements for the Social Sciences Minor

The Social Sciences minor spans the areas outside the major that a student with a Social Sciences teaching certificate should be prepared to teach. The listing belows details the requirements for the minor:

ECON 112 Microeconomics

HIST 112A World History to 1500

HIST 112B World History 1500 to Present

HIST 130A or 130B

     130A History of Black America to 1865

     130B History of Black America 1865 to Present

HIST 323 Social Science Pedagogy

POLS 111 Introduction to Political Science

POLS 112 American Government

SOCI 111 Introduction to Sociology

POLS 300, 340, 342 or 370 (take one)

     POLS 300 Introduction to Political Analysis

     POLS 340 The Presidency

     POLS 342 Issues in American Public Policy

     POLS 370 Introduction to International Relations

Geography majors pursuing Social Science Certification to teach must meet with Dr. Susan Hume (Phone: 618-650-2091 / Email: shume@siue.edu) before the end of their first semester as a declared Geography major pursuing teacher certification.
