Gloria Man-wai Cheung So

Gloria Man-wai So graduated with a Master’s in Geography from SIUE in 1986.

Gloria was a graduate assistant in the Department of Geography. She enjoyed her studies and her work. While pursuing her Master’s, Gloria was also taking care of her family, which at that time included a four-year-old son.  She had trouble reaching the computer keyboard when working on her master’s thesis because she was several months pregnant with her second child.

After graduating from SIUE with her master’s degree, Gloria worked part-time as a real estate broker. She saw potential in the economic development in the towns of Edwardsville and Glen Carbon and started her own business, investing in commercial and residential properties.  Gloria also returned to her first love of oil and watercolor painting.

Gloria’s painting style is somewhere between realism and abstractism. She believed that painting is an ongoing dialogue between light, color, shape, tone, texture, and personality. She received many awards from various art associations such as the Gateway East Artists Guild, the Madison County Art Council and the Mount Vernon Center of Art and the Laredo Art League. Gloria donated her cash prizes to various scholarships. She also auctioned some of her artwork to support universities and charitable organizations.

After moving with her husband, Dr. Jacky Yuk-chow So, to Texas A&M International University in 2004, Gloria became a part-time instructor of Chinese Language and Culture, a role she continued in when the couple moved to the University of Macau in 2009.

Gloria and Jacky have three adult children: Alexander, Lapde, Victoria and three grandchildren. Gloria passed away in 2012.
