Graduate Programs

Anthropology participates in SIUE's Integrative Studies master's program, offering a specialty in Cultural Heritage and Resources Management. Students can choose either the MA or MS, taking courses in anthropology and geography for students inteterest in archaeology careers or anthropology and history for students interest in museum careers. Undergraduate Programs

Anthropology offers undergraduate bachelor of arts (BA) and bachelor of science (BS) degrees, as well as a minor in Anthropology. Anthropology also coordinates Interdisciplinary Studies minors in Forensic Sciences and Native American Studies

Declaring a Major/Minor

Students should declare their major or minor through the office of Academic Counseling and Advising or College of Arts and Sciences. Students are required to consult with an Anthropology faculty mentor for pre-registration advisment.  A C average in anthropology courses is a graduation requirement.

Major Requirements

The BA and BS degrees are based on a common core of anthropology courses. In addition, the BA degree requires 8 credits of a foreign language, and the BS degree requires 6 credits of field school (ANTH 473, 474, or 475 -- offered only during Summer Session). Students seeking a degree in anthropology must complete a minor in another discipline or an area of specialization. The area of specialization consists of 18 credits in one or more disciplines selected in consultation with faculty mentor. The specialization can include Anthropology courses that do not also count toward anthropology major requirements. Students doing a double major are exempt from this requirement.

Anthropology Electives(15 credits total)
Electives may include any Anthropology courses that are not part of the required core, with at least one 300 or 400 level course in Archaeology and Bioanthropology and at least one 300 or 400 level course in Cultural or Linguistic Anthropology

Additional Requirements BA/BS
The BA degree requires two semesters (8 credits) of a foreign language. Instead of a foreign language, the BS degree requires 6 credits in field school courses: ANTH 473, 474, or 475. Field schools are offered only during the Summer Sessions.

General Graduation Requirements

To earn a degree in Anthropology, students must complete all program requirements, including earning an average GPA of 2.5 in anthropology courses, as well as meet University requirements for general education, credit hours, and GPA. Students should file an application for graduation no later than the first day of the term of graduation.

Minor Requirements

A minor in anthropology consists of 18 hours. Twelve of these hours must be in junior (300-level) or senior (400-level) courses. Students are required to take an introductory course (ANTH 111a or ANTH 111b). The remaining hours consist of anthropology electives selected in consultation with a faculty mentor.
