This is old news in more ways than one: we are late in reporting that Assistant Professor Susan Kooiman published a book back in 2021. Ancient Pottery, Cuisine, and Society at the Northern Great Lakes explores changing subsistence and social relationships in the Northern Great Lakes from the perspective of food-processing technology and cooking. Dr. Kooiman examines precontact Indigenous pottery from the Cloudman site in Michigan’s Upper Peninsula to investigate how pottery technology, pottery use, diet, and cooking habits change over time and how these changes relate to broader cultural phenomena.

Dr. K’s research shows that ceramic technology and cooking techniques evolved to facilitate new subsistence and processing needs. Her interpretations of past cuisine and culinary identities are supported by comparisons with ethnographic and ethnohistoric accounts of local Indigenous cooking and diet. The complementary nature of these diverse methods demonstrates a complex interplay of technology, environment, and social relationships, and underscores the potential of such analysis to better understanding archaeological societies worldwide.

This book is based on Dr. K’s dissertation, which won the Midwest Archaeological Conference’s dissertation award in 2019. In his review of her book, published in Midcontinental Journal of Archaeology, Sean Dunham writes that the book is innovative, engaging and well written, and finally, an overwhelming success. It’s no surprise that he highly recommends it, and so do we. Congratulations on your fine work, Dr. Kooiman!

The Edwardsville Rotary Club named Southern Illinois University Edwardsville College of Arts and Sciences senior Megan Walsh,

The anthropology major was nominated by Susan Kooiman, PhD, assistant professor in the Department of Anthropology and faculty advisor for the SIUE Anthropology Club, for her outstanding leadership style and revitalization of the club despite the challenges of the COVID-19 pandemic. of Toledo, Ill., the February SIUE Rotary Student Leader of the Month.

“Megan is a natural leader and demonstrates her abilities when opportunity arises,” said Kooiman. “Her leadership shines in all levels from classroom and field projects to community action. Perhaps most importantly, however, Megan has learned to be a fair and humble leader. She always endeavors to represent the needs of everyone, is both transparent and fair, and makes decisions while incorporating the opinions and interests of others. Although being a strong leader may come naturally for many students, being a fair leader is indeed a unique characteristic. I cannot think of another person more deserving of the student leadership award.”

When she took over as club president, Walsh reorganized by setting up an email list, registering the club with the University and attending several University events for recruitment.

“Once I had a viable club it was about engaging them,” explained Walsh. “We hosted movie and game nights (starting with the Mummy, an archaeology classic), professor dinners, community service projects, fundraisers, etc. Due to the pandemic, we switched to a mostly online format hosting events like a virtual multicultural food night to celebrate national anthropology day as well as virtual movie nights.”

While she credits the revitalization of the club to the students who are involved, Walsh also mentioned how thankful she is to have had the support of Kooiman as well as Julie Zimmermann, PhD, chair and professor in the Department of Anthropology.

“Megan has proven an exceptional student leader this year,” Kooiman wrote in her nomination form. “In fall 2019, Megan took over as president of the Anthropology Club, which had been waning and struggling. By the time I took over as club faculty advisor in January 2020, Megan had revitalized and reorganized the club. Her enthusiasm and passion for anthropology and the club has spread throughout the other students and now there is a healthy membership, active participation and new students eager to take up leadership positions.”

When asked how she became interested in anthropology, Walsh replied, “I intended to major in physics, but as a freshman, I stumbled upon anthropology when I took Human Ancestry and Adaptations and fell in love with the field. I am a biological anthropologist and found that the discipline perfectly merges science with respect to history and culture.”

In addition to her position with the Anthropology Club, she is also the public relations officer of the SIUE Philosophy Club, a participant in the Legacy Advanced Leaders Program, and is a member of the American Anthropological Association and the Lambda Alpha Anthropology National Honor Society, both professional anthropology organizations.

After graduation this spring, Walsh plans to attend graduate school at either the University of Oklahoma or George Mason University. Her long-term goal is to complete her doctorate in bioarcheology and continue to teach, research and foster a love of anthropology in others.

Walsh was honored at the Edwardsville Rotary Club meeting in March, and will be honored at the 2021 SIUE Kimmel Student Involvement Center Leadership Awards Ceremony the week of April 26.

Southern Illinois University Edwardsville alumna Sacha Jackson of, Edwardsville, who earned a bachelor’s in anthropology, French and psychology in May 2020, achieved third place in the Lambda Alpha Senior Scholarship Award competition of the Lambda Alpha National Anthropology Honor Society – a first for a student in the College of Arts and Sciences’ Department of Anthropology.

After accepting the nomination by anthropology faculty and pursuing a daunting application process, Jackson was recognized for her senior capstone project, which focused on the Lyles Station Consolidated School and Museum and the encapsulating community.

“Lyles Station, Indiana, is the last remaining African American farming community in the state,” said Jackson. “For over 200 years, the families in this community have bonded together through blood and land, with their unique microcosm leading to a featured position in the Smithsonian’s National Museum of African American History and Culture. As a descendant of this location, my intention was to highlight the heritage site as a nexus for history, pride and identity of the residents and descendants of this community.”

When asked how she became interested in the field of anthropology, Jackson replied, “I have always had an intense interest in what motivates people collectively and individually. This focus developed organically into a deep curiosity about cultures outside of my zone of perception, and supported my enthusiasm for learning a language that will provide increased access to others.”

Jackson plans to expand her study into cultural anthropology during graduate school. She aspires to work in a museum or within an organization that places high importance on fostering honest, open dialogues between cultures and peoples to bring greater understanding to why we are, who we were and what we shall become.

“Winning this award is a sign that my passions led me on the right path,” Jackson said. “This acknowledgement from the larger anthropological community inspires one to proceed down an unknowable path with greater confidence. The support and encouragement of SIUE’s Departments of Anthropology and Foreign Languages and Literature is beyond measure. My long-suffering professors have no idea how grateful I am for their patience, understanding and willingness to laugh in questionable times.”

While at SIUE, Jackson was involved in numerous initiatives, including instruction in SIUE’s Head Start/Early Head Start program, French document transcription and translations through the Undergraduate Research and Creative Activities (URCA) program and archival assistance in the Interdisciplinary Research and Informatics Scholarship (IRIS) Center.

Below is the list of students and their awards. Perhaps the most important of these awards is the Fred Voget Outstanding Senior Project. Please note that we always recognize last year's Fred Voget recipients at Honors Day, because we haven't had our Senior Project Symposium or essay competition yet for this year.

We celebrate our amazing anthropology students - every day, but Honors Day especially. Congratulations to these hard-working students!

We have also had some major personnel changes in Anthropology in recent months. Our Chair since 2012, Professor Jennifer Rehg, was promoted to Asssociate Dean in the College of Arts and Sciences, a position which she assumed on July 1, 2018. We are sorry to lose a great teacher and our favorite primatologist, but the Dean's office is awfully lucky to have her. We are grateful to Jen for her years of dedicated service to Anthropology, and we wish her the best. You can read more about her new job here. We are happy to announce that Dr.Cory Willmott was promoted to Professor and Chair of Anthropology on July 1. Of course we wish her the best also!

Finally, we are really happy to announce that we have a new Anthropology Teaching Lab, Peck 0405. The old lab, Peck 0403, is now the Anthropology Research Lab. As the name would suggest, the old lab is now dedicated to research, although there are a few classes that will be offered there, and the room is still the unofficial home of the SIUE Anthropology Club. Peck 0403B has become Dr. Corey Ragsdale's Forensic Anthropology and Bioarchaeology Lab. We look forward to all the great research he and his students will accomplish in this space!

On that note, Dr. Ragsdale has just had a book chapter come out - the book is Bioarchaeology of Pre-Columbian Mesoamerica: An Interdisciplinary Approach. Check it ou! Or buy it! Corey states, and I quote, "Turns out Aztec biology matches what they claimed to be..."

And here are Dr. Balasundaram and students in our new Anthropology Teaching Lab, Peck 0405:

Jeff Thomas, internationally renowned Urban Iroquois photographer, will visit the SIUE campus this March to open a show of his work, titled Birdman Rising: Conversations beyond Colonialism. The show will feature photographs Thomas took during a prior visit to the area, including photographs of Native American artifacts from the SIUE University Museum collections and landscapes at local Native sites such as Cahokia Mounds. The Birdman is a powerful symbol of Cahokia and also represented in the University Museum collections. As the title of the show suggests, the portrayal of these artifacts and local landscapes in Thomas’s art seeks to engage the audience in a dialogue with Native Americans in the contemporary world.

The show will be open and free to the public at the Edwardsville Art Center from March 23 through April 20. Thomas will be at the opening Friday, March 23 from 4-6 pm. He will also present a public lecture at Peck Hall (Room 2304) on the SIUE campus on Wednesday, March 21, at 7:30 pm.

Thomas is a guest of Native American Studies and its contributing departments, Anthropology, Historical Studies, and Philosophy. His visit is made possible by a generous grant from the SIUE College of Arts and Sciences Targeted Funding Initiative.
