Applied Communication Studies

UNDERGRADUATE PROGRAM OVERVIEW

The study of applied communication involves the development of theories, research tools, and strategies to analyze, explain, and improve human interaction. Departmental courses focus on interpersonal relationships, small-group decision making, communication patterns in organizations and other complex systems, public relations and strategic communication, and speaker-audience interaction in public communication contexts.

The Department of Applied Communication Studies at Southern Illinois University Edwardsville features three undergraduate tracks: the Interpersonal Communication Track; the Corporate and Organizational Communication Track; and the Public Relations Track. Each undergraduate track has specific requirements, curricula, and career opportunities. A minor in Applied Communication Studies is also available as part of the undergraduate program of the Department of Applied Communication Studies.

Undergraduate students of the Department of Applied Communication Studies Department are encouraged to work closely with faculty during coursework and research projects as well as through advising and mentoring. Students receive their formal academic advisement from the College of Arts and Sciences Undergraduate Advising.
