Kirsten Santos Rutschman

Kirsten Santos Rutschman is a Lecturer in Music Theory at SIUE. She holds a Ph.D. and M.A. in musicology from Duke University; an M.A. in Language and Culture in Europe from Linköping University, Sweden; and a B.A. (with Distinction) in German Studies from Stanford University. Her research on nineteenth-century Swedish music and nationalism has been supported by grants from Fulbright, the American-Scandinavian Foundation, and the Lois Roth Endowment. She has published in Nineteenth-Century Music Review, Ars Lyrica and edited collections, and written numerous score prefaces and liner notes. She has presented her work at local, national and international conferences across the US, the UK, and Scandinavia.
A church organist, choral singer, and Scandinavian fiddler, Dr. Rutschman maintains an active life as a music-maker in addition to scholar and teacher. She equips her students to do the same, helping them build solid foundational and advanced skills towards better understanding musics of a variety of styles. In addition to SIUE, Dr. Rutschman also teaches at Saint Louis University and Webster University.
