From Jimmy, To America: An Ode to James Baldwin
Devised in artistic collaboration with Jacqueline Thompson,
Bashir Page-Sanders and Christopher Page-Sanders.
Inspired by the life, words and work of James Baldwin, this production centers around the contemporary view of the Black Experience. Separated into three movements, "From Jimmy, To America: An Ode To James Baldwin," brings to the light themes of self identity, sexuality and racial equity in which his richly complex and nuanced words become life and moving art. Although Baldwin may have been speaking of 1960s America, in 2022, all of his concerns with America and the treatment of people of color in America still ring true. With a varied score featuring music that ranges from classical to jazz, to gospel to hip-hop, and everything in between, the spirit of James Baldwin lives in this production as actors and dancers explore these topics together. The performance concludes with a brief post-show discussion featuring the choreographers, dramaturge, artists as well as other community liaisons.
Artistically led by Christopher and Bashir Page-Sanders, NU-World Contemporary Danse Theatre intentionally brings together adiversegroup of artists: in age, artistic background, and ethnicity, to create work that centers in the human experience. often described as raw, engaging, and thought-provoking, through the power of dance theatre, nu-world contemporary danse theatre is dedicated to telling the stories of humanity.
