Hands-on Learning
Using their understanding of the diverse characteristics and abilities of each student, as well as how individuals develop and learn within the context of their social, economic, cultural, linguistic and academic experiences, MAT candidates will create instructional opportunities that maximize student learning during student teaching. Through careful planning, content, practice and management, student teachers will create and foster a supportive learning environment.
In the school setting, MAT candidates will demonstrate evidence-based instructional techniques, and will incorporate research-based strategies and interventions, as well as resources and technologies to meet the diverse learning needs of students. Student learning will be monitored, and student teachers will adjust instruction accordingly using their knowledge of the purpose, characteristics and usage of assessment types. Students who already work in a school district have the option of completing their practicums where they work. The rigorous MAT program at SIUE ensures our graduates are classroom ready.
In place of a separate field experience, candidates currently working in special education classrooms can explore proven ways to prepare lessons for the diverse needs of their students.
What do our students say about the MAT program?
"Entering the MAT program was one of the best decisions I have made. The cohort exposed me to the Virtual Professional Practice Lab, which gave me the confidence to complete my field placements. In addition, it gave me the opportunity to build lasting relationships with future teachers just like me."
-Lunetha Robinson
"The MAT program has allowed me to pursue my goals with a group of individuals who are driven, kind and passionate about becoming the best educators they can be. The opportunity to earn your master's while working in the field, and being able to take what you learn and apply it every day is just a small part of what makes this program special."
