Dear Colleagues,
Thank you all for your continuing flexibility, commitment and patience as we work through the difficult situation caused by COVID-19. We know that you are all concerned about the effects that an extended reduction in University operations or COVID-19 illness could cause for you and your families. Hopefully, the information contained in this communication will help clarify pay and benefit leave opportunities considering the recently enacted Families First Coronavirus Response Act (“FFCRA”).
SIUE’s previous emergency paid leave provisions began on March 17th and ended March 31st. As of April 1st, employees now have access to new federal leave provisions.
The attached poster from the Department of Labor and links below provide important information regarding the Families First Coronavirus Response Act (“FFCRA”) which took effect April 1, 2020. Employees who fall within those categories of eligibility under FFCRA are eligible to submit a special Leave Request Form as available on the Human Resources website.
The FFCRA incorporates
1.) the Emergency Family and Medical Leave Expansion Act, and
2.) Emergency Paid Sick Leave Act. Please read the information contained in this communication carefully. The major provisions of these acts as they pertain to SIUE employees are:
If you should become ill with COVID-19 or are quarantined because of COVID-19 symptoms and are unable to work:
- You can use existing leave or access Emergency Paid Sick Leave which is detailed in the provided links.
If an immediate family member that you care for becomes ill with COVID-19 or is quarantined because of COVID-19 symptoms and you are unable to work from home:
- You can use existing leave or access Emergency Paid Sick Leave which is detailed in the provided links
If you are unable to work from home because of childcare issues:
- You are able to receive 2/3 of your pay for up to 10 weeks following the first 2 weeks (using emergency paid sick leave or personal leave) according to the Families First Coronavirus Response Act (FFCRA) which is detailed in the provided links
If you have questions about any of these provisions, please contact Human Resources Benefits for assistance. You may contact Bonnie Brueggemann at bbruegg@siue.edu or Summer Murphy at summurp@siue.edu.
I hope that this information is helpful. I hope that you stay well.
