Travel Guidelines
Employees
To protect the health and safety of our campus, faculty and staff who travel internationally to any country that the CDC defines as no longer being in an “orange” or “red” zone by the CDC, or domestically to a “red zone” county on the Harvard Global Health Institute’s COVID Risk Levels Dashboard are expected to stay away from campus.
An individual exhibiting COVID-19 symptoms or identified as a close contact must follow the appropriate guidelines for isolation and/or quarantine, which is different than this policy.
International University Travel
University-related travel remains prohibited until further notice. In the future, when University-related international travel resumes, these requests will only be approved to or through any country that the CDC defines as no longer being in an “orange” or “red” zone by the CDC.
Domestic University Travel
While domestic travel for University business is allowed with approval from the appropriate vice chancellor, travel, in general, is discouraged, particularly to areas where the number of individuals diagnosed with the COVID virus is increasing.
Personal Travel
The University cannot restrict personal travel. However, to protect the health and safety of our campus, faculty and staff who travel internationally or domestically to a “red zone” county on the Harvard Global Health Institute’s COVID Risk Levels Dashboard are expected to stay away from campus. Employees who did not travel prior to returning to on-ground work during the re-entry testing period may return to work at any point during the re-entry period. They must schedule their re-entry testing appointment within 48 hours after arriving on campus.
Employees returning from travel are expected to either:
- Stay away from campus upon return for 10 days after travel, or
- Get tested with a Polymerase Chain Reaction (PCR) test 3-5 days after travel AND stay home for 7 days after travel, even if the employee test negative.
Employees electing to take a PCR test using the SIUE saliva test (3-5 days after travel) may ONLY visit the testing site at their scheduled test time. Employees must then leave campus, receive negative test results, and complete the remainder of their "7 days away" before returning for on-ground work on day 8. No additional testing will be necessary.
Personal Travel Update 1.15.2021
A person who has tested positive for COVID-19 within ninety (90) days prior and:
- has clinically recovered, OR
- has not been symptomatic for a period of ten (10) days since symptom onset, AND
- has not been identified as a close contact exposure (CCE)
is permitted to return to campus following personal travel to a “red zone” given that the person has previously submitted their self-disclosure report and meets the above criteria.
A person who has had a positive test result for COVID-19 more than ninety (90) days prior must follow the established travel guidelines.
Students and Student Organizations
Student Travel
To protect the health and safety of our campus, we are asking students, student employees and graduate assistants to carefully consider the risk to the shared community when making decisions regarding personal travel and follow CDC Guidelines for travel both internationally and domestically.
While students, student employees and graduate assistants are not expected to stay away from campus following travel, SIUE does expect all community members to follow CDC guidelines and encourages those who travel domestically to evaluate the risk associated as defined by the Harvard Global Health Institute COVID Risk Levels Dashboard.
Student Organization Travel
University-related student organization travel, including overnight and day trips (travel exceeding 30 miles from campus), is not permitted during the spring 2021 semester.
Student Government funding for travel will be restricted to virtual conference registration expenses only for the spring 2021 semester.
Travel between the Edwardsville, Alton and East Saint Louis campuses is permitted.
