Title

Recent and Long-Term Migration Patterns Between the States of Venezuela as of 1990.

Abstract

ABSTRACT A descriptive analysis of recent (1985-1990) and long-term (pre-1980) migration between the states of Venezuela using net migration rates and migration exchange ratios is the focus of this paper. Net migration losses were highest in the Federal District and several of the northeastern states between 1985 and 1990, while states surrounding the Federal District recorded the highest gains. Migration exchange ratios are computed by dividing in-migrants to a state from all other states by out-migrants from that state to all other states. Results indicate that all states had a more favorable exchange of migrants for recent versus long-term migration, except the Federal District which lost total migrants between 1985 and 1990. In conclusion, it would appear that recent internal migration patterns in Venezuela were more dispersed throughout the country than they were in the pre-1980 period, and would suggest a general diffusion of migrants down the urban hierarchy. Key Words: internal migration, Venezuela.
