SIUE Track and Field Adds Higgins, Hayden
EDWARDSVILLE, ILL. - Southern Illinois University Edwardsville track and field Interim Head Coach Kareem Jackson announced two more signees for the 2010 season.
The Cougars have added Michelle Higgins (Aurora) and Deontae Hayden (Wichita, Kan.) to the roster.
Higgins was the state Class 3A runner-up this past season in the long jump for Waubonsie Valley High School. She helped her team tie for second place at the Illinois High School Association state championships.
"Michelle gives us another really good jumper on the women's team who can also run the sprints for us," said Jackson. "I am looking forward to working with a student-athlete with so much upside. She is dedicated to becoming better and is used to winning and performing well at big meets. Her coaches rave about her work ethic and leadership qualities. She will make an immediate impact to our women's program."
Hayden, of Northeast High School, was the top returning long jumper in Wichita, Kan., but he focused much of his attention on the sprints as a prep senior. Hayden is a 400-meter specialist and ran the anchor leg of his 1,600-meter relay that took fifth at the Kansas State Championships.
"Deontae will help add depth to our jumps groups led by Andrew Thierry," said Jackson. "Deontae also will challenge for both relays this year."
