Plato, The Trial and Death of Socrates

 

 

 

I.                    Take-Home Essay: Type up a 1-2 page response to the following question to hand in on the day of the in-class test.

 

What is the nature/function/value of Philosophy according to Socrates (Plato)?

 

[You should discuss Socrates’ method as exemplified in the Euthyphro and the Socratic mission as described in the Apology.]

 

 

 

II.                 In-Class Test: The test will be given Thursday, February 6th in class. 

The test will consist in part of 5-10 multiple-choice questions about the details of the readings, counter-examples to conceptual analyses, and the following terms:

1.       philosophy

2.       Fallacies: begging the question, ad hominem, straw man, ad populum

3.       reductio ad absurdum

4.       dilemma arguments

5.       necessary and sufficient conditions

 

There will also be 2 short essay questions.  I will choose 2 questions from each of the groups below to put on the test, and students will pick one from each group to answer.

 

 

A.     Euthyphro

1.       Why does Socrates ask Euthyphro about ‘piety’?

 

2.       How does Socrates reduce Euthyphro’s second response to absurdity?

 

3.       How does Euthyphro’s third response ultimately beg the question?

 

 

B.     Apology and Crito

1.       What is Socrates’ explanation of his popular reputation?

 

2.       How does Socrates defend himself against the charge that he corrupts the youth of Athens?

 

3.       Explain why Socrates thinks people should not worry about the opinions of the masses.

 

4.       Explain why Socrates thinks it would be unjust for him to escape from prison.
