The Free Will Problem

Freedom and Foreknowledge

P1:    If God is omniscient, then God knew before I was even born that I was going to do X at time T.

P2:    If God cannot be wrong, then I cannot refrain from doing X at T.

P3:    But if I cannot refrain from doing X at T, then I cannot do X at T freely.

C:      So if God is omniscient, then I cannot act freely.

          Naturalistic Free Will Dilemma

P1:    Every action is either causally determined by prior events and the laws of nature or it is indeterminate.

P2:    If S’s action A is causally determined by prior events and the laws of nature, then S could not have done other than A.

P3:    If S’s action is indeterminate, then S could not have done other than A.

C1:   So S could not have done other than A.

P4:    S’s action A is free only if S could have done otherwise.

C2:   S’s action A is not free.
