Book Reviews for Digital Image Processing and Analysis, by Scott Umbaugh, published by the CRC Press, Taylor & Francis Group, 2011

"Where needed, chapters are extremely well illustrated with full color images supplied where appropriate. ... My impression of this textbook is that it can be easily used as a basis for instruction in a variety of image processing and analysis areas in undergraduate and graduate work in fields from computer science to electrical to biomedical engineering and in a number of related fields of endeavor involved in image perception and analysis. ... The text is written at a junior-year or above level and used as a basis for advanced studies involving images. It is quite up to date. I recommend it highly."
—Paul H. King, Vanderbilt University, IEEE Pulse, July/August 2012

"This is a nicely presented book and the topics it covers in depth are well described. … if you are looking for a book on the basics of image processing complete with some ready-made software to let you work through the ideas, this is a good choice. Needless to say it would make a good course text …"
—Mike James, IProgrammer, September 2011

"The text, which is richly illustrated with both drawings and example images, and the CVIPtools package are highly integrated. This creates a learning environment that is particularly suited to students, computer scientists, and application developers. ... Altogether, the author has produced a book that presents both the practical and theoretical aspects of digital image processing in a way that is efficient for learning, as well as research- and application-oriented development. He does an excellent job of showing how algorithms work and what the results look like. ... The CVIPtools application and libraries are very useful. Compared with the first edition, two newly added software tools, the Computer Vision and Image Processing Algorithm Test and Analysis Tool (CVIP-ATAT) and the CVIP Feature Extraction and Pattern Classification Tool (CVIP-FEPC) offer a more complete set of tools for developing and testing algorithms. ... Overall, this is an excellent text for the student or professional looking for a practical introduction to or an overview of the wide world of digital image processing and analysis."

I've read several books on Computer Vision and Image Processing and this is the one that helped me the most. Dr. Umbaugh clearly and thoroughly explains the material and reinforces the discussion with many examples. You can also see the algorithms in action with the CVIPtools software that accompanies the text. If you need to get an even deeper understanding of the algorithms, full source code is included with the package. Thanks to Dr. Umbaugh for a great resource that helped me get through my Master's degree.”

Computer Vision/Image Processing algorithms clearly explained, Jimi Jazz, October 27, 2011

“I've been using the previous edition of this book in my graduate Digital Image Processing and Analysis (DIPA) course for the past three years. The revised edition of this book appears to have a significantly higher number of figures and many of these are printed in color. In addition, the author has included a lengthy chapter that describes various applications of DIPA. This chapter is especially valuable for understanding how various image processing operators can be used to build complex DIPA systems. In summary, this book and its accompanying software provide a wonderful environment for learning/teaching DIPA concepts.”

“This is an excellent and unique text book as it is written for those students who are completely new in Image Processing and Analysis. It covers all the topics involved in Image Processing and all concepts are beautifully and clearly explained and developed. The examples in the book are clear and concise that help you to understand the theory perfectly and the exercises cover a broad range of Image Processing Applications. Since I used the first edition so I can ensure that this book is more interesting, colorful and well organized to the first one. One of the greatest perks of this book is the application development tools, CVIPtools along with two new CVIP-ATAT and CVIP-FEPC. CVIP-ATAT and CVIP_FEPC are very useful and helpful when you will work with hundreds and thousands of images. This is an amazing application development tools. Not only you learn Image Processing and Analysis mathematically or theoretically but you learn practically and let CVIPtools aid you. End chapter problems with CVIPtools and solved examples enhance the skills in Image Processing. I strongly recommend that any student who wants to build a firm Image Processing basic should surely spend his thoughts on the material presented in the book.”
