History 200 Fall 1998
On Wednesday, November 4, you will have the second examination of the term. It will cover assigned readings from chapters 6 through 9 in Out of Many as well as assigned readings in Discovering the American Past. The examination will consist of an essay and multiple choice items. The essay will be taken from the following list. In preparation for the examination, please read the question carefully, look for information in your readings and in your class notes, draft a response, and discuss it with your fellow students. This should prepare you for success in class.
1. Enumerate several important factors or events that contributed to the crisis in relationships between Britain and the Colonies between 1763 and 1775. Explain how each party viewed these factors and why it was so difficult to resolve them. Be as specific as possible and be sure to show causal relationships that help explain certain events.
2. Discuss the problems encountered by the Continental Congress in drafting and winning approval for the Articles of Confederation. How were these reflected in the document itself? Name and discuss at least three significant achievements of the United States under the Articles.
3. Describe the major proposals for a new constitution at the Convention in Philadelphia in 1787. What were the terms of each, and who supported each? Why? How were differences resolved in the final document? Comment on the problems of ratification and their resolution.
4. Compare and contrast the views of Thomas Jefferson and Alexander Hamilton with respect to constitutional interpretation, governmental fiscal policy, and international affairs.
5. Debates over entering the War of 1812, the American System, and the admission of Missouri to statehood revealed deep sectional conflicts in America. Discuss these and indicate why specific sections took the positions that they did.
