Among the outstanding artists who gave distinction to the initial (1969) MRF season were cellist Leonard Rose, the Modern Jazz Quartet, Janis Joplin, Butterfield Blues, the King family, Joni Mitchell, Arlo Guthrie, the New Christy Minstrels, Richie Havens, Joan Baez, and pianist Van Cliburn.
