Dr. Clarence
W. Stephens was named vice president of operations for the Edwardsville
campus on August 11, 1961. President Morris had been personally directing
affairs in the Southwestern Illinois region since Dr. Harold See had unexpectedly
requested to return to research on November 19 of the previous year. It
eventually became evident that Dr. See, who had so ably guided the residence
centers and had worked tirelessly to bring about the reality of anew Edwardsville
campus, had reached a fundamental disagreement with President Morris over
academic planning. See's replacement, Dr. Stephens, had served as the university
budget officer since 1958.
