Where can I find measures of excessive, impulsive and compulsive buying?

The Catalog of Excessive Buying Scales contains items used to measure:
  • compulsive buying
  • impulsive buying
  • emotional buying
  • frugality

How do researchers define compulsive buying?

  • a "tendency to be preoccupied with buying that is revealed through repetitive buying and a lack of impulse control over buying" (Ridgway, Kukar-Kinney & Monroe, 2008, p. 622)
  • "an abnormal form of shopping and spending in which the afflicted consumer has an overpowering, uncontrollable, chronic and repetitive urge to shop and spend" (Edwards, 1993, p. 67)
  • "excessive or poorly controlled preoccupations, urges or behaviors regarding... spending" (Black, 2001, p. 17)
  • shopping that is "experienced as an irresistible-uncontrollable urge, resulting in excessive, expensive and time-consuming retail activity" that is often "prompted by negative affectivity" and which results in "gross social, personal and/or financial difficulties" (Kellett & Bolton, 2009, p. 83)
