| Teaching During his tenure as a mass communication instructor, Prof. Murphy has had the opportunity to teach a variety of courses in very distinct university environments. Currently he is an associate professor at Southern Illinois University Edwardsville, where he has been teaching since 1994; in Mexico (1990-91, 1993-94, spring 2000) he was a visiting professor at the ITESM Queretaro Campus; from 1991-93 he served as Teaching Associated at Ohio University. Courses which he has taught include Transnational Communications; Media Critical Theory; Mass Communication Theory; Documentary Media; Qualitative Research; International-Intercultural Communication; Video Production; Audio Production; and Introduction to Mass Media. Since joining the Graduate Faculty at Southern Illinois University-Edwardsville in 1996, Murphy has served on more than 20 thesis committees of students that have successfully defended their work. At the graduate level he teaches Mass Communication Theory and three other classes that are cross listed as upper-level undergrad/graduate courses (Documentary Media, Transnational Media, and Media Critical Theory). Currently he is the Department of Mass Communications Graduate Program Director a position he assumed in July 1999. Since beginning his tenure as Program Director, he has created a Media Literacy Post-Baccalaureate Certificate Program, the only one in the greater St. Louis area. |
