What is the Purpose of an Index/Database?

An index provides you with the information you need to find  articles:

Citation  The citation will provide the information that you need to find the article.  The parts of a citation include: article title, author, periodical name, volume and issue information, date of publication, and pagination.
Abstract  The index may also include an abstract or summary of the article's content.
Full text  Sometimes an index will link to the complete text of the article.
