The interview for applying to student teach will provide opportunities to:
2. provide opportunities to advise
students in the semester prior
to the student teaching experience
and to verify that all requirements
have been met
3. build mutual support and collegiality with area teachers
4. pass on a sense of professionalism
1. The student completes and turns in a request for a Student Teaching Interview one semester prior to the semester in which s/he chooses to student teach.
2. The student meets with the university supervisor for foreign languages and obtains an instruction sheet on the dossier including the documents required, the preparation for the interview and the departmental requirements for acceptance to student teaching.
3. The Student Teaching Interview schedule is set up by the university supervisor for foreign languages. The Student Teaching Advisory Committee is made up of the university supervisor for foreign languages! a professor from the student's teaching field and, when available, a public school teacher from the language to be taught by the prospective student teacher. Other full time faculty in the language to be taught are invited to attend or to submit comments in writing to be shared with the committee.
4. The interview is conducted much like a job interview. Discussion of the transcript (GPA and grades in specific courses important to teaching in the high school --survey literature courses, culture courses and language courses), of progress on the senior essay and of other courses in progress. The interview also includes a 10-15 minute presentation in the language that the candidate will teach. For this presentation, the student prepares a brief talk in the target language about his/her background, vocation to teach, ideas about teaching the target language and about career goals. (See Appendix A.) Appropriate attire is recommended.
5. Upon completion of the interview, the student is advised whether s/he is accepted for student teaching. If the student is accepted, the student teaching application/authorization of eligibility form is signed. At this time, advice regarding placement for the field experience and the student's future career may be discussed. A conditional green light may be given regarding student teaching with requirements for acceptance specified. If the student does not receive approval, s/he is given suggestions and advice on resubmitting the request and the dossier.
6. The Department of Foreign Languages and Literatures requires a B average in courses pertaining to the major.
7. The dossier includes: a transcript and resume. Students should follow the resume format that appears in Appendix B.
