Masters of Science in Education with a Concentration in Spanish (M. S. in Ed.)

The Department of Foreign Languages and Literature in cooperation with the Department of Curriculum and Instruction offers a Spanish teaching field as part of the Master of Science in Education degree in secondary education.  Candidates who wish to pursue a Spanish teaching field within the graduate program in secondary education must receive approval of the Department of Foreign Languages and Literature.

Persons seeking admission to the Master of Science in Education program must complete two applications:  one to the Graduate School and one to the Secondary Education Program in the School of Education.  Both application forms are available from the Office of the Associate Dean in the School of Education.  The School of Education forwards the application to the Graduate Spanish Advisor for approval.  The student is notified of acceptance by mail by the Graduate School.  The application deadline for summer or fall semester enrollment is March 1.  September 1 is the deadline for applications to enroll in the following spring semester.  Prospective student meeting application deadlines usually are notified by the Graduate school of their status in one month from the time the application was submitted.

Program of Study

A minimum of 36 semester hours is required for degree completion.  These are distributed as
follows:

General Professional Core  (9 hrs):  EDUC 501, 515; EDFD 506a or 506b.

Secondary Education (12 hrs.):  CI 510  Additional courses are determined in consultation with the student's advisor.

Spanish (15 hrs.):  These courses are determined in consultation with the Spanish Graduate Advisor.  Courses offered at the 500 level count for graduate credit;  400 level courses count for graduate credit unless otherwise indicated in the Undergraduate Catalog.   If a student is within one year of graduation and no other courses are being offered, the student may enroll in SP 491 to complete individual or small group work supervised by Spanish faculty.  A maximum of 3 credit hours is allowed.  Students may also transfer a maximum of 6 credit hours of graduate study abroad coursework from an accredited program.  For information on study abroad for graduate students, consult these sites:

Students must achieve a 3.0 (A = 4.0) grade point in Spanish, as well as an overall average of 3.0.

Candidates must pass both written and oral final examinations based on the content of the courses taken in the program. An exit project is generally completed and is presented as part of the final oral examination.  There is no thesis requirement, but a candidate may elect to prepare a thesis.  For candidates who prepare a thesis, the final oral examination will include a defense of the thesis.
