Description of Lab Requirement

Spanish 301 is a four credit hour course. Three hours of credit will be given for class attendance and work. The fourth hour of credit must be earned by completing 100 minutes each week completing lab assignments.  While the Foreign Language Training Center (FLTC) is under renovation, students may need to use other labs on campus or work on Internet assignments at home. It will be the student's responsibility to keep a lab log of time spent.  The lab assignments are an integral part of the course since they provide students opportunities to improve their language skills through the use of authentic materials. Lab assignments for SP 301 include:

Evaluation of Lab Work:  The lab grade (25% of course grade) will be determined by averaging credit for the number of minutes spent in the Language Training Center and the quality of the work completed.  The total number of minutes will constitute 50% of the lab grade;  the average of the grades received on lab assignments will determine the other 50%.  Late work is only accepted in the case of illness or emergency.  Documentation may be required.

"Diego Jesús Jiménez: La poesía es un arma de
dos filos que te hunde y te salva" por Jesús García Calero

el rumbo- direction     la altura- height     el filo- edge

retocar-touch up         desencajarse- to become distorted
hundir- to sink

propio-own                 habitable- inhabitable
contracorriente- against the tide (or norms)

Information on the Spanish sitcom "Una hija más"- Seven 28 minute episodes of this Spanish sitcom are available for viewing. Each episode counts as one video assignment. The sitcom centers on the misadventures of the Sanchez family and their "hija americana" Amanda, an exchange student from California.  Students are advised that understanding the episodes may require more than one viewing.  Students are not expected to understand everything.  They will be evaluated on improvement in comprehension and written expression over the course of the semester.

The members of the Sánchez family include: Demetrio, a furniture manufacturer, Angeles, a home maker, and their two sons Junior, 18, and Dani, a precocious 11-year-old always scheming to strike it rich. They also have a daughter named Lines who lives with Amanda's family in California. Mr. and Mrs Sánchez have a live-in maid, Nati (short for Natividad). Nati is like one of the family.

Episode 1: "Bienvenida y adiós"- Amanda arrives in the midst of domestic upheaval. Although the family tries to put on a good front, Amanda is not fooled.

Episode 2: "La llave del reino"- Amanda's money is stolen, Angeles and Demetrio meet with a divorce lawyer and Junior uses Amanda's arrival as an excuse to throw a wild party.

Episode 3: "Llamen a un psicólogo"- Demetrio plans to sell the house as part of the divorce agreement so he can buy a posh bachelor pad. Nati and Amanda join forces to keep the house. Dani pursues his latest scheme to make his first million.

Episode 4: "Familia cristiana"- Demetrio has a very conservative client. He arranges a "family" dinner to impress the client. In preparation, he does some redecorating. Demetrio has a surprise in store for him when Amanda and Junior wear their costumes for the exhange students' costume party to the dinner table.

Episode 5: "Regalo de cumpleaños"- Amanda is immersed in a school assignment about popular Spanish music while the Sánchez family plans a surprise birthday party for her.

Episode 6: "La carta de Lines"- Amanda encourages Angeles to attend a singles outing. Lines writes her parents a letter and they discuss whether they should tell her about the divorce. Amanda overindulges during an evening out with friends.

Episode 7: "Por primera vez"- Angeles has her first date and Demetrio is jealous. Dani has an American-style garage sale that is unsuccessful. Nati convinces him to try a "rastro," or Spanish-style flea market with a typical dish "callos," tripe, to attract customers.
