IF DR. MOORE IS YOUR MENTOR FOR GBA 490, READ THIS!!!

The GBA 490 Process With Dr. Moore:

  • Expect to submit multiple drafts of your paper to Dr. Moore, before it's ready to submit to Dr. Martell.

    Jo Ellen will return each draft to you with LOTS of scribbles - more than you can imagine. The first draft typically requires lots of corrections and improvements. But that's where the learning takes place. For most students, the 3rd draft is suitable for submission to complete GBA 490.

  • When you have a draft ready for Dr. Moore to review, deliver it to her via email, fax, or hardcopy to her CMIS Dept. mailbox.

    She will review the paper and try to deliver it back to you (with scribbles) within 48 hours. Typical ways to get the paper back to you: (1) by fax if you provide your fax number, (2) by leaving a hardcopy for you to pick up at the front desk of the CMIS Dept. office.

    If you submit the draft to Jo Ellen via fax or hardcopy, you should email her so she will know to look for it. This will increase your odds of receiving feedback within 48 hours.

  • Do not submit a FIRST draft to Dr. Moore during the week that the GBA 490 paper is due.

    It's too late. There's no guarantee whatsoever that Jo Ellen will be able to review the paper and get feedback to you in time for you to finish the GBA 490 requirement (the odds are very much against this). During the week that GBA 490 papers are due, Jo Ellen will be giving priority to students who are working on final drafts of their papers (along with her other job responsibilities).

Dr. Moore's Advice on Writing:

  • STRUCTURE-STRUCTURE-STRUCTURE

    Every sentence should have a clear purpose (or it shouldn't be there). The connection from one sentence to the next should be apparent to the reader. If the connection isn't clear, you need to add a bridge for the reader or remove one of the sentences if it isn't serving a purpose.

    Practice top-down design in your writing. Identify the major points you need to make before you start writing. Decide what order those points should go in. Decide what minor points (or examples, elaborations) you need to make to expand on each of the major points. THEN start writing. Use section headers and paragraph structures to maintain the general design you've laid out.

    In general, the content of your GBA 490 paper should reflect the following organization:
    * Introduction
    * Substance/Problem (draw on your primary reference)
    * Implications
    * Recommendations
    * Summary

  • WRITING IS AN ITERATIVE PROCESS

    Always plan for multiple drafts of a document -- not just in GBA 490, but in any writing you do. The first draft typically provides an initial shot at what you want to say, but may contain remnants of stuff that you originally thought would be included but now don't really belong or add anything. The second draft should be much tighter in content and have a more defined feel to it. Once you get to that point, you can focus on final touches to ensure that each sentence is clear and grammatically correct.
