¥ Associate Professor, Southern Illinois University Edwardsville, 2003 to present

Teach courses in the graduate TESL program, undergraduate linguistics and composition. Responsible for developing and overseeing ESL/Bilingual approvals program. Commonly taught courses: Grammatical Analysis; K-12 ESL Methods and Materials; Assessment in ESL; Language and Culture; ESL Reading and Writing Pedagogy; Professional Development.

 

¥ Assistant Professor, Southern Illinois University Edwardsville, 1997 to 2003

 

¥ Lecturer, St. Michael's College, Vermont, 1996 to 1997, summer 1998

Primary responsibility was to teach courses in the MA TESL program in the grammar of English, theory and methods in ESL, and supervise practicing teachers.  Developed new undergraduate/graduate course in adult ESL literacy.

 

¥ Lecturer/Instructor, University of Pennsylvania, 1989 to 1996

 

            Graduate School of Education , 1992 to 1996

Program development and administration in M.S. TESOL and Ph.D. Educational Linguistics programs. Teach courses in introductory linguistics and the use of computers in TESOL. Advise masters and doctoral students. Develop a combined TESOL - teacher certification program for elementary and secondary levels.

Teach courses in higher-level academic ESL (listening to lectures, library research, writing the research paper, academic speaking, academic writing). In 1994 developed a new curriculum for a research paper-writing course.

¥ Consultant, Kensington Joint Action Council, 1995 to 1996

Develop new curricula for all adult ESL classes and training teachers in ESL methodology for community center in diverse urban neighborhood in Philadelphia.

 

¥ Research and consulting, Save the Children-Mali, West Africa, 1994-1995

Assisted Save the Children-Mali with curriculum development, led a workshop on action research for community organizers, and designed and carried out an ethnographic evaluation of the quality of education in a native-language village school system.

                                                           

¥ Research Assistant, National Center on Adult Literacy, 1991-1992

Conducted research on two projects funded by the National Center on Adult literacy. One project explored the possibilities of using Head Start centers as sites for adult and family literacy classes. The other was a long-term ethnographic project investigating the relationship between first and second language literacy in Cambodian and Puerto Rican communities and schools.      

 

¥ Instructor, Southeast Asian Mutual Assistance Associations Coalition, 1990-1993

Taught adult basic education courses and adult ESL. Work included leading workshops on ESL and literacy for the other teachers.                 

                                   

¥ High school English teacher, Kobe, Japan, 1986-1987

Taught English in high school in Kobe, Japan working for the Japanese Ministry of Education. Taught in three different high schools and participated in in-service English training for Japanese English teachers.
