Intro to philosophy (Vailati) Spring 2011
Write a paper on one of the following topics.  For length and due date, see the syllabus.  Make sure you address the topic.

1.     State the argument from Kant or Aquinas you consider most successful in elucidating the case The Suicide Tourist presents.  Then evaluate the argument in the light of the documentary.

2.     In your readings, Taylor advances a biting critique of Compatibilism, claiming that it amounts so some sort of trick.  Is his account of Compatibilism fair, or is he just attacking a straw man?  Explain.

3.     Mill distinguishes utility from expediency.  Clearly explain the basis for his distinction and whether it helps in defeating the charge that for Utilitarianism the end justifies the means.

4.     In A Grief Observed, C.S. Lewis says that he is in little danger of becoming an atheist.  Rather, “The real danger is coming to believe such dreadful things about [God].  The conclusion I dread is not, ‘So, there is no God after all,’ but, ‘So this is what God’s really like.  Deceive yourself no longer.’”  How could an orthodox theist reply?  Discuss.

Remember that in order to write a successful paper,

·       You need to study (i.e., read and think about) the relevant readings.

·       You must use arguments to support your views
