The overall theme of research is the development of new instrumentation to do elemental analysis. We are seeking to make instruments that are smaller and can perform analyses faster than existing methods. There are two projects starting up at this time. The first will create a miniature pulsed plasma for vaporizing solid samples. The second is a careful study of the vaporization and atomization properties of tungsten filament electrothermal atomizers.
