CD ORDER FORM “Passport” Selections
SIUE Suzuki Strings to Tour Europe 04/26/2006
The musical talents of 23 young violinists in the Metro East are soon to be showcased around the world. The SIUE Suzuki Strings Violin Tour Group is set for a tour through Europe this June. SIUE's Suzuki String Violin group is comprised of local musicians age 11 to 18 who have been taught under the Suzuki method. Under these teachings, children as young as 3 may begin playing an instrument by listening to the pieces they will study and playing them by ear, even before they learn to read music. On tour, these talented young musicians will play for audiences in Salzburg and Vienna, Austria, and Prague, Czech Republic. The Suzuki Strings' musical performances are based on their recently released CD, "Passport," a collection of classical, popular and folk selections from around the world. From the traditional music of the United States, Canada, Scotland and Sweden to the folk music of China, Israel, Spain and Hungary, there's something for everyone on their album and at their concerts. "Passport" also includes such classical masterpieces as J.S. Bach's "Concerto for Two Violins," Handel's "Sonata No. 3 in F. Major" and "Gavotte" by J.P. Rameau. For those who may not want to travel to the other side of the world to hear the SIUE Suzuki Strings live, the group will be performing at 5:30 p.m. May 6 at St. Andrew's Church Flower Festival in Edwardsville. Since 1994, the group of young people has been led by director Allison Woerner, a performer and teacher of stringed instruments. Woerner obtained her Bachelor's Degree in Music Education from the University of Missouri at Columbia and further earned a Master's idegree n Violin Performance from SIUE. Since, Woerner has performed in numerous orchestras throughout the metro area and currently teaches 35 students at her studio in Ballwin, Mo. Woerner says she truly enjoys being a part of the Edwardsville based Suzuki group. "I have a great time with this group," Woerner said. "Because they are all so talented, we are able to work on difficult music, far beyond what most young people have the opportunity to perform. With six high school seniors this year, we have a particularly outstanding group. Beyond all that, they are just a very lively, fun group of kids." In addition to the Suzuki Strings two previous Holiday CDs, their most recently released "Passport" may be purchased at any of their upcoming concerts, or online at www.siue.edu/MUSIC/Suzuki or by calling the Suzuki Office at 618-650-2839. ©Edwardsville Intelligencer 2006
