Biographical Sketch of
Dave S. Knowlton

David Knowlton is a native of Mississippi and has his roots on the Perthshire Plantation in the heart of the Mississippi Delta.  At a very young age, his family moved to Memphis, Tennessee. David attended Briarcrest High School, where he got a wonderful liberal arts education.  David is particularly grateful for his experiences as a percussionist in the Briarcrest Band.

After graduating, David did a short (and somewhat miserable) stint as a student at The University of Mississippi.  As a sophomore, he returned to Memphis State University, now The University of Memphis.  David is a Tiger Band Alumni.  His Bachelor's, Master's, and Doctorate are all from Memphis.

Other than a couple of years as an instructor for The Colts Drum and Bugle Corps,  David was in Memphis until 2001.  Between his Master's and doctorate, he was a full time faculty member at Horn Lake High School, where he taught English, German, Video Journalism, and band.  (The Superman picture is courtesy of a Horn Lake band student, circa 1994.)  After finishing his doctorate, he was the Director of The Center for Distance Education and Learning Technologies at Crichton College

Throughout his time in Memphis, he was heavily involved in music education.  He taught part-time in approximately twelve different secondary and middle schools across the Mid-South.  Most recently, he was a percussion instructor for the Bolton High School Band from Arlington, Tennessee.  He still serves as one of the musical arrangers for Bolton's band.

In addition to his current teaching activities and research agenda as associate professor of Instructional Technology at Southern Illinois University Edwardsville (SIUE), David still is heavily involved in percussion and percussion education.  He is a member of SIUE's percussion ensemble.  His current music education credits include his role as a staff member for The Academy of Percussive Arts, the front ensemble instructor and musical arranger for the Waterloo High School Marching band, a general effect designer for the Granite City High School Band, and a percussion judge within the Mid-Continent Colorguard Association

David is a proud husband and father (so he can't resist including a picture of his wonderful daughters).  David and his family attend First Baptist Church Maryville.  In his spare time, he enjoys hanging out with his best friend, Dr. David Sharp, who is a managing economist and Director of the Memphis, TN office of Nathan Associates, Inc.  He does other fun stuff, too.  When all else fails, you can probably catch him watching a Pittsburgh Steelers game.
