COURSE SYLLABUS: Urban
Anthropology – Fall 2003
Course Description
and Objectives:
This course seeks to provide insight into the factors that give rise to cities and to
urbanization. We will also examine the quality and character of urban life from
an anthropological perspective by looking at how urban institutions structure the
life chances or opportunities of urban dwellers. Major anthropological theories of
urbanization will be reviewed in light of recent empirical research findings.
Substantive issues to be examined include: urban housing; family structures;
race and ethnic relations; community within the city; work and unions; city politics
and urban policy.
Students will be required to conduct research on one aspect of urban social
life. Each student is expected to write a ten page research paper and to share their
findings with the class through classroom discussion.
Course Requirements:
A. Class Participation: Students are expected to READ ALL ASSIGNED material and
to take notes on each before coming to class. Vigorous participation in class
discussions is also expected. Each student should REFLECT CAREFULLY on
