Dr. DeGarmo:  "The Department of Political Science offers a student center approach to the study of government and politics through hands-on-experiences and personal attention.  It is an up and coming academic community in the Midwest that is home to hardworking scholars who are respected in their fields and dedicated to academic excellence.  Our graduates are well trained, civically engaged and are dedicated leaders in social, economic and political dimensions of their communities.  Our sponsors help make this approach to higher education possible.  Today we would like to honor the best of our best!

Scholarships and Awards

Awards & Scholarships The Department of Political Science conducts several award competitions throughout the academic year. Each award recognizes excellence within a particular area of Political Science.  Individuals who receive these awards are recognized at the College of Arts and Sciences Honor Day Convocation and receive a small stipend.

Gordon D. Bush Political Science Scholarship Endowment 
This award celebrates Dr. Gordon Bush’s life-long interest in the political process as well as more than 40 years as a public servant, with 32 of those years as an elected official, and to recognize outstanding achievement by an SIUE student majoring in political science.

The recipient of this scholarship will be chosen by a committee established by the Dean of the College of Arts & Sciences.  The recipient will be chosen based on consideration of the following criteria:
+   Full-time junior level student majoring in Political Science
+   GPA of 3.0 or higher

Applicants must submit an essay on an urban politics topic with topics to be announced at the beginning of each fall semester and graded/selected by a committee appointed by the Chair of the Department of Political Science. Awardee will be recognized at the College of Arts & Sciences Annual Honors Convocation. The amount of the scholarship is $500 and may be used for tuition or applied to educational costs. The Curly Harris Award
Lloyd “Curly” Harris served in the Illinois House from 1937-1969.  In his honor, the Curly Harris Award is given annually to the major in Political Science that has achieved the highest GPA for their coursework. Faculty evaluates the transcripts of graduating seniors to determine GPAs for majors and based on this evaluation, an awardee is selected.  The winners of the Lloyd Curly Harris Award:

2011-2012: Jenna Schneider
2010-2011: Brandon Rahn  and Calley Mize.


Evelyn Bowles Public Service Scholarship
This award honors Evelyn Bowles’ lifetime commitment to public service and education, as well as to encourage those underrepresented in the ranks of elected officials, to participate in government, to participate in the electoral process, and to seek public office. Evelyn Bowles served in the United States Coast Guard Women’s Reserve Intelligence Division during World War 2.  She served 8 consecutive terms as the Madison County Clerk before moving to the Illinois State Senate.  Former Senator Bowles was appointed to the Illinois State Senate in 1994 and served in this capacity for 8 and ½ years.  She served as the Democratic Spokesperson of the Senate, as well as numerous other committees such as the Environment and Energy Committee, the Local Government and Elections Committee, the Licensed Activities Committee, the State Government Operations Committee, and the Agriculture and Conservation Committee. Senator Bowles amassed numerous accomplishments during her political career.Applicants must submit a 1000 word essay on the on the benefits to the community from women holding elective office.  Competitive essays will be chosen by a committee established within the Department of Political Science and approved by the College of Arts and Sciences, and judged based on which applicant most represents Evelyn Bowles’ life. .  The Awardee will be recognized at the College of Arts & Sciences Annual Honors Convocation. The amount of the scholarship is $1000 and may be used for tuition or applied to educational costs.

The recipient will be chosen based on consideration of the following criteria:
+  Be enrolled as a full time student
+ Have a GPA of at least a 3.0
+ Reside in Madison County, Illinois
+ Demonstrate financial need
+ Demonstrate a strong interest in participating in government at any level
+ demonstrate involvement in government, public and/or community service activities

Jeremiah Houk Strive for Excellence Award
Jeremiah Houk was a senior in the Department of Political Science when he tragically lost his life. Jeremiah will be remembered for his motivation and determination to succeed and his willingness to explore non-traditional issues in Political Science.  A GPA of 3.5, coursework and scholarship in non-traditional areas of Political Science are the qualifications for this award.  Each academic year, faculty of the Department screen the work of Political Science majors to determine which student best fulfills these qualities and the spirit of Jeremiah. The winners of the Jeremiah Houk Award:

Political Science Association Award for Community Service  
This award is given to highlight the spirit of the Political Science Association and their commitment to community service, civic engagement and non-partisanship.  Each academic year, faculty of the Department screen transcripts and resumes of graduating seniors to determine whether students meet the 3.5 GPA requirement and have been actively involved in community outreach.  Selection of the winner of this award is based on the highest GPA in combination with service activities. Pi Sigma Alpha Award for Excellence
This award is presented to a member of Pi Sigma Alpha who best exemplifies “excellence” in both academic and personal pursuits.  Recommendations are provided to the faculty by the Faculty Mentor of this organization and the faculty select a winner of this award for each academic year. Winners of this award:

Study of Diversity in Politics Award  This award is presented to the student with the highest GPA and record of specialty in the Politics of Diversity.  Faculty who teach within this subfield recommend students to the entire faculty for consideration.  Student transcripts are analyzed and faculty vote to select a winner. Winners of this award:
