Masters Program Advisee's Checklist

Please look at the information below and on the Program Outline Timeline and Field Study pages.   This information is intended as a guide for you, and will provide answers to many of the questions you may have about completing a Master's degree in education.  Each student has different needs, however, so you will need to keep in touch with Dr. Taylor, and amend these recommendations as appropriate. Remember you are responsible for following the information in the Graduate Catalogue, which is the legal document for all program requirements.

You need to keep a record of your progress down the following checklist:

Initial procedures

Receive letter from Elementary Program Director,  Dr. Taylor, identifying your advisor. (If you are not at this stage, then complete the general application procedures to the Graduate School (618 650 3167).
Email your advisor, Dr Taylor:  ataylor@siue.edu (preferred), or phone 618 650 3446 for an appointment.
Arrive at appointment having read:
  1. catalogue description of masters program
  2. department guidelines outlining structure of degree
  3. course schedule for current/future semester
Complete and sign Plan for Completion of Master's degree.  Receive copy in mail.
Sign up for initial classes.
Complete a Graduate Student Request Form to transfer up to 12 hours of unclassified courses completed PRIOR to your acceptance into the program, or courses from another institution. Not all course transfer.  Forms available to down load from: http://http://www.siue.edu/GRADUATE/
Note  the date you are required to complete your studies by (six years from your initial acceptance, unless this is changed by your transferred courses).

Annual procedures

Call department (3082) to register for classes for next semester.  (If classes are part of your plan, you do not have to speak directly to me to do this, however, if you wish to check anything, then you can email me).  It may take several days for your request to be processed, so call well in advance.  An email to me expressing interest in a class does not automatically register you.  If you specifically ask me to register you, I will complete the paper form and hand it in for processing.
Send me an email notifying me of your progress. I will then transfer this information onto my copy of your plan.  If you do not do this, it is hard for me to keep up to date with course you have completed.

COMPLETED COURSES and GRADES.

Expected COMPLETION DATE of degree (this may or may not change)

You can keep up to date online with your schedule, room changes, transcript and grades at www.siue.edu/COUGARNET.  Click on the word "Cougarnet" and then at the next screen sign in with your ID and password. You can get on-line access to all your student records, including past courses and current enrollments.
You are responsible for registering for all classes and meeting all deadlines.
Check the Timeline and make sure you are meeting your targets. Take care to plan the final 18 months of study carefully in conjunction with Dr. Taylor (see timeline).
Think about ideas for your final Field Study, perhaps related to work you are doing in one of your master's classes.
