A typical timeline for final 18 months of your master's degree

This timeline assumes you are graduating in May.   Information on this page is for your guidance and should be checked with appropriate sources for accuracy.

Action Month Countdown to completion Description
Enroll in Summer class CI 548 210 Study of Classroom Instruction

*Alert me if you have already taken 4 hours or more of CI 596 credit prior to this course.

June 12 months to go An 8 week course beginning once a year in the summer. This course will help you understand action research, and thus to identify the topic and structure for your project.  By the end of this course you should have:

tried some action research in your own class

completed a one page statement describing your proposed project

made a plan/timeline for your project

identified some areas of important literature you will read.

written a draft of up to three chapters of your project.

 

Enroll in CI 596 210 Action Research in the classroom in either Fall or Spring and  UNIV 500 (no credit) the other semester

Data Gathering and Reflective Analysis

Sept-Dec 9 months Work on your project in your classroom. Take careful notes.  Read more literature where appropriate
Complete an "Application for Graduation" to the Service Center at Graduate School. Dec 5 months

SIUE will send paper work to both of us confirming what courses you still need to  complete your degree.  

Sending in this application triggers your graduation date in May.  The latest you can apply for graduation is during the 1st week of the semester of graduation.

Writing Jan-Mar 4 months Careful write up of your project from rough notes and memos.
Rough Draft 1 Feb 3 months Submit electronic version as 1st draft for comment.  Remember it will take 1-2 weeks turn around for me to respond.
Rewrite and submit Draft 2 1 Mar 2  
Date fixed for Oral Presentation 15 March   We communicate via email
Final Paper submitted 1 April Phew! Hand in three appropriately bound copies and keep one for yourself.
